Clearing Snow, Cleaning Up, and Staying Safe

After a winter storm, you may face challenges, especially if your power is out. Here are some simple steps to help you dig out, clean up, and stay safe and warm.

1. Start Clearing Snow Right Away

If it is warm enough and safe, go outside and clear the snow around your home and vehicles. Fresh snow is lighter and easier to shovel than packed snow.

2. Remove Snow from Your Roof and Ice From Gutters

Snow on your roof can cause ice dams, which may lead to leaks in your home. Clear off the snow on your roof, garage, and sheds. If you prefer, you can hire a professional to do this.

3. Check Your Trees

Look at the trees in your yard to see if heavy snow has broken any branches. Damaged branches can fall and cause injury or damage. Contact a professional to trim any damaged trees.

4. Test Your Detectors

Make sure your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors work. This is important if you need a fireplace, space heater, or generator for heat. Check the batteries and replace them if necessary.

5. Examine the Inside of Your Home

Check for signs of damage inside your home, such as cracks or leaks on ceilings, which could mean roof damage. Also, watch for issues that may indicate frozen pipes. If your pipes are frozen, call a plumber and turn off the water supply.

6. Take Care of Your Pets

If your pets want to go outside, watch for hazards like icicles or downed power lines. After they come inside, clean their paws to prevent them from licking any salt used to melt snow.

7. Keep Warm

If you are without power, dress in layers and use hand warmers. Close off rooms you are not using and stay together in one room to trap body heat. Choose a room that gets sunlight during the day. Use towels to block drafts from doors and windows, and drink hot liquids.

8. Avoid Driving Right Away

Please stay off the roads until crews can clear them. If you must drive, use only plowed roads and be cautious of black ice.

9. Report Any Damage

If you have damage to your home or vehicle from the storm and are a Chubb client, contact your agent or visit their website to report a claim. You may need to talk about your auto insurance and personal liability.
